Social Media Basics: It's too personal!
If you do business on Facebook, you might not want to mix your business and personal stuff.
There are TWO type of pages on Facebook:
- Personal (you get Friends here)
- Business/Fan Page (you get Likes here)
If you never post anything that your mom wouldn't want to see on Facebook, then you should be fine with "just" having a Personal facebook page. You might want to create a "networking" page, which is basically ANOTHER personal page that is created with a separate e-mail address.
Personally, I do not have a "networking" page. I am very careful with what I post, and when I post personal things with my family and friends, they are things that I actually want my professional contacts to see, to show them that I am a "real person" and not just "about business" all the time.
IF you do want to create a different page for just your networking contacts, you'll need to use a different email address. So for me, this is what the pages would look like:
- Personal page (just for my friends) - I create this using my "Yahoo" email account, and call it "Randy Keith"
- "Networking" page (just for networking contacts) - I would create this using my "Gmail" email account, and call it "Randy Keith" (notice it is the same name, but a different page/account)
- Business/Fan page (just for business) - I would create this page while logged into my "Networking" page. It is called "Premier Piano Shows," the name of my business (notice my personal name is NOT in the name of my business page, even (and especially) for MLM distributors.
It is actually a little more complicated than it looks. But once you get the hang of it, all you have to do is know which email and which facebook account you are using.
